SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Acoustic waves that jumpstart healing in chronic tendon injuries. Non-invasive, no downtime, and often effective when other treatments have failed.

HOW IT WORKS

Shockwave therapy (also called ESWT) delivers acoustic pressure waves to damaged tissue. These waves stimulate the body's natural healing response.

It increases blood flow, breaks down calcifications, and triggers the release of growth factors that promote tissue repair.

Originally developed to break up kidney stones, it's now widely used for musculoskeletal conditions—especially chronic tendon problems that haven't responded to rest and physical therapy.

The Science:

  • Stimulates neovascularization (new blood vessel formation)
  • Releases growth factors (eNOS, VEGF, BMP)
  • Breaks down calcified deposits
  • Disrupts pain signaling (substance P)

CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Shockwave is particularly effective for chronic tendon conditions that haven't responded to conservative care.

Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common and effective uses. Often provides relief when nothing else has worked.

Achilles Tendinopathy

Chronic Achilles pain that won't go away with rest and exercises.

Tennis/Golf Elbow

Lateral and medial epicondylitis that's been lingering for months.

Patellar Tendinopathy

"Jumper's knee"—chronic pain at the base of the kneecap.

Calcific Tendinitis

Calcium deposits in tendons, especially the shoulder (rotator cuff).

Hip Bursitis

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome that won't resolve.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1

Treatment Session

Each session takes 10-15 minutes. The applicator is placed on the affected area and delivers 2,000-3,000 pulses. You'll feel a tapping sensation that can be intense but tolerable.

2

Typical Protocol

Most conditions require 3-6 sessions, typically scheduled 1 week apart. Some people notice improvement after the first session; others need the full course.

3

After Treatment

Some soreness is normal for 1-2 days. Avoid anti-inflammatories (they can interfere with the healing response). Light activity is fine; avoid high-impact activities for 48 hours.

4

Results

Full effects typically develop over 6-12 weeks as the tissue heals. Success rates vary by condition but range from 70-90% for appropriate candidates.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Does it hurt?

It's uncomfortable but tolerable for most people. We can adjust the intensity. Some soreness for 1-2 days after is normal and actually indicates the treatment is working.

Are there any risks?

Shockwave is very safe. Mild bruising, swelling, or numbness can occur but resolves quickly. It's not appropriate for certain conditions (active infection, blood clotting disorders, pregnancy, or over open growth plates).

Do you accept insurance?

We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. For self-pay patients, we offer transparent pricing. Contact us for current rates.

Who shouldn't get shockwave?

Shockwave isn't appropriate for everyone. We'll evaluate whether you're a good candidate during your consultation. Acute injuries, infections, and certain medical conditions may be contraindications.
