WHAT ARE TRIGGER POINTS?

Trigger points are hyperirritable spots in muscle tissue—often called "knots." They're tender when pressed and, importantly, they refer pain to other areas.

That headache might actually be coming from your neck. That arm pain might originate in your shoulder. Trigger points often explain pain that seems to have no clear source.

They develop from overuse, injury, poor posture, or stress—and they tend to stick around until specifically addressed.

Common Trigger Point Patterns:

  • Upper trap → Headaches and neck pain
  • Infraspinatus → Shoulder and arm pain
  • Piriformis → Sciatica-like symptoms
  • QL → Lower back and hip pain

HOW WE TREAT THEM

We use several techniques to release trigger points, depending on the location, severity, and your preferences:

  • Manual pressure: Direct pressure to release the taut band
  • Dry needling: Thin needle to create a twitch response (often the fastest relief)
  • Instrument-assisted: Tools to work deeper tissues
  • Stretching: Specific stretches to maintain the release

Treatment is usually part of a broader plan that addresses why the trigger points developed in the first place.

CONDITIONS THAT RESPOND WELL

Tension Headaches

Often originating from trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Common in desk workers and those with poor posture

TMJ / Jaw Pain

Trigger points in jaw muscles can cause significant pain

Lower Back Pain

Especially when combined with hip tightness

Hip Pain

Gluteal and hip flexor trigger points are extremely common

Chronic Pain Syndromes

When nothing else has worked, trigger points are worth investigating

COMMON QUESTIONS

Does it hurt?

Trigger point work can be uncomfortable—it's often described as "good pain" or "hurts so good." We work within your tolerance and the discomfort typically decreases quickly as the trigger point releases.

How many sessions will I need?

Depends on how many trigger points you have and how long they've been there. Some people feel significant relief after one session; others need several. We'll give you a realistic estimate after your evaluation.

Is this different from massage?

Yes. While massage can help with general muscle tension, trigger point therapy is more targeted and diagnostic. We're specifically locating and releasing individual trigger points that are causing your symptoms.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO for rehab services. For self-pay patients, we offer transparent pricing with no surprises.
